On Dressing Well

Know first who you are, and then adorn yourself accordingly.
— Epictetus, Philosopher

There is an art to dressing well, and that art comes from knowing who you are and embracing it. When you discover your style, it is an empowering feeling. My journey in dressing well began with purchasing a pair of classic high heels, which I considered my first investment piece as a young professional. As a young, petite, introverted female, finding my voice, let alone embracing my body type, was initially a struggle. In a world of quick glances, first impressions, and entrenched stereotypes, I felt as though the world was against me.

Judging is an intrinsic part of human nature. I knew the goal of diverting judgement by others would be futile. What I had control over, however, was how I perceived myself. Instead of focusing on all my physical shortcomings---which I could not change---I concentrated that energy on embracing styles that resonated with me, that spoke to my body. Style encompasses more than the clothes you wrap your body in; it incorporates your mannerism, it embodies your personality, it aligns with your attitude.

To me, class is internal.

Overview of "Dress the Part"

In this section of my site, I will be sharing my journey in dressing well. This includes sharing the investment pieces I have collected over the years that are wardrobe staples. To me, being fashionable and dressing well mean two different things, and when given the choice, I would always strive for the latter. Style transcends age. I value classic pieces, elegant designs, intricate details, and quality materials. The older I get, the more emphasis I place on owning fewer, but higher quality pieces that I can reach for over and over again. Of course, dressing the part should not be too serious of an endeavor; having fun is half the equation. Here, I will also be sharing fun items, occasional splurges, impulsive buys that have become regrets, as well as functional pieces that serve as the foundation for playing up the aesthetics.

A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.
